If you’re planning a vacation and looking for a country with a rich history and thriving arts scene, Puerto Rico is the place for you! Puerto Rico has dozens of museums and galleries for you to enjoy when you visit, and most of which are conveniently located near La Concha Resort. Here is a list of our favorite museums and galleries for you to coordinate into your itinerary when booking your trip to Puerto Rico:
One of the most prestigious art museums in Puerto Rico is the Museo de Arte de Ponce. Established in 1959 and accredited through the American Alliance of Museums, its permanent collection consists of over 4,500 works of art from artists all over the world. The art gallery has attracted millions of visitors from all over the world throughout the past 58 years.
If a gallery with a more modern approach to art is something you’re interested in, then the Museo de Las Americas, founded in 1992, could be something you’d like to visit while in Puerto Rico. The gallery focuses on art of American Indian heritage, African heritage, and the evolution of Puerto Rico. The gallery receives over 40 thousand visitors annually and has had 500 temporary exhibits since opening its doors.
Another well-known museum of history worth visiting in Puerto Rico is the Cathedral of San Juan Bautista. This historic landmark is a must-see for every visitor of San Juan. Touted as the oldest church in the United States, some key things you’ll want to make sure you experience are Ponce de León’s tomb, the mummy of St. Pio, and its beautiful stained glass windows. If you’re visiting around Christmastime, be sure to see enactments of the Nativity there.
Museo de Casa Blanca is a quiet, affordable museum to look into while in Old San Juan. With its structure dating back to the 1500’s, visitors will also be impressed to find out that the house was first built for Ponce de León and his family. Guided tours of the house depict a life preserved in time with great views of the San Juan Bay. This museum is a must for anyone interested in an authentic Old San Juan experience.
The Fortin Conde de Mirasol Museum in Vieques, administered by the Puerto Rican Institute of Culture, is the last Spanish fort built in the Americas. Built in the mid-1800s, the fort houses a collection of indigenous artifacts and a beautiful art gallery. The original walls built to protect the fort can be seen around it, along with a few canons. Visiting this museum and art gallery is a real “deal” as it offers some of the best views in Puerto Rico and is a great spot for a vacation selfie.
