Walking Tour for Foodies in Old San Juan

Ever wanted to learn about the destination you’re visiting while savoring their delicious food at the same time? When in Puerto Rico, you can! At La Concha Resort we have this amazing Old San Juan city and food tour-in-one, where you get to learn about Old San Juan’s history and how the food is part of its cultural background. The city food tour is a 3-hour walking tour around the cobblestone streets of Old San Juan, where foodies will get to discover Puerto Rican gastronomy with 5 food stops at different locales. The tour is for all kinds of foodies, even the ones with dietary restrictions, you just let the Tour Desk know when booking your tour so they can make the necessary modifications on each food spot.

As one of our favorite tours in Old San Juan, the first stop is at a cozy cafe, where foodies will get to try its coffee made with house-roasted local beans and a bite of mallorca, pour-overs, light fare & displays on coffee-making, as well as its story, museum and some fun facts about coffee in Puerto Rico.

Next, the tour will make a few short stops on key places as part of the city tour, such as El Morro, El Museo Las Américas, La Perla Cemetery, the San José Catholic church, until getting to the second food spot where foodies can savor a sweet local pastry while roaming the streets of Old San Juan for some more historical facts.

Later, and just before hunger strikes, foodies will arrive at the third food spot of the day for a traditional mofongo appetizer while learning about plantains and all kinds of food that can be created with this amazing fruit as the main ingredient.

For the fourth stop, foodies will get to refresh with a white rum cocktail made with tropical fresh fruit juices while waiting for a heavier meal at a “fonda”. Lunch at a fonda is a vintage typical tradition in Puerto Rico, it’s usually a place where you go to grab a quick but heavy menu-of-the-day lunch. There are a few places left around Puerto Rico like this type of restaurant, and La Concha’s food tour lets you have the whole experience.

As for dessert goes, the tour makes its fifth and final stop at a gelato shop, where homemade Puerto Rican gelato is made right in the back of the shop. To refresh the San Juan heat, foodies can taste different homemade gelato flavors to finally choose the one they like best.

Last but not least, and to settle the stomach for digestion, foodies will walk down to visit the Bastion of the Palms where they can see the entrance of the ships to San Juan, make a summary of the whole tour and wrap up the great food adventure.
